Statement by Belarus' MFA Press Secretary Andrei Popov With Regard to the Situation in the Middle East
Minsk, 31 July 2006
Belarus expresses its deep concern over the continuous escalation of violence in the Middle East, which entails the growing number of innocent victims among civilians, including children.
In light of the Israeli airforce bombing of the residential areas in the Lebanese village of Qana, which resulted in death of dozens of civilians, among them a great number of children, we send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the whole Lebanese people.
We consider such actions as intolerable and as a gross violation of international humanitarian law.
We call upon the international community to take account of the terrible tragedy in Qana, apply maximum efforts for cessation of fire by the conflicting sides and ensure a subsequent peaceful settling of the conflict exclusively through negotiations.
