Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus on the Tragedy Involving Russian Diplomats in Iraq

Minsk, June 27, 2006

Belarus has heard with deep pain the news of the fatal that most likely happened to the four Russian diplomats who had been taken hostage by terrorists in Iraq earlier this month.

Deeply shocked by this tragedy, Belarus’ people express their deepest condolences to the bereaved families and to the brotherly Russian people.

Belarus condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbarous act of terrorism and confirms its readiness to continue the implacable fight against this international evil.

We urge the Iraqi authorities and the occupation forces to undertake every possible measure to bring to justice those responsible for this heinous crime.

Belarus reminds of the special responsibility of the occupation forces for maintaining peace and security of Iraqi citizens and foreigners in this country.
