Statement of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus regarding the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 25 May 2009

The Republic of Belarus is a consistent adherent of the nuclear non-proliferation and invariably supports global efforts towards nuclear disarmament. Having given up its nuclear arsenal voluntarily, Belarus largely contributed to ensuring non-proliferation regime.

In this respect, the Republic of Belarus took with great regret the news about the nuclear test carried out by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 25 May 2009 in breach of UN Security Council resolution 1718. This act brings serious damage to international initiatives on securing the nuclear arms non-proliferation regime.

The Republic of Belarus calls on the DPRK to ensure implementation of the UN Security Council decisions and refrain from the actions that pose threat to peace and security in North-East Asia region. We are confident that the North Korean nuclear programme should be addressed on the basis of international law within a six-party negotiation process.
