Foreign Minister of Belarus S.Aleinik meets the UN Secretary-General

On September 23, 2023 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, held a meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. The parties discussed the current difficult situation in the world in general, and in the Eurasian region in particular. S.Aleinik highly appreciated the contribution of the Secretary-General to overcoming the global challenges of our time and expressed continued support for the UN efforts to resolve the crisis in the field of food and fertilizer shortages.

Special attention was paid to the role of Belarus in its region and its interaction with UN structures. The Secretary-General expressed his conviction that Belarus, like no other country in the world, is interested in a peaceful settlement of the crisis in neighboring Ukraine.

S.Aleinik confirmed the invitation of the Belarusian Head of State to A.Guterres to visit Belarus.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus also met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mirjana Spoljaric Egger. A plan for the implementation of joint actions for the current year and the preparation of a cooperation plan for 2024 were discussed. The trust-based nature and effectiveness of cooperation between Belarus and the ICRC were stated.

S.Aleinik informed the interlocutor about the migration situation on the western border of Belarus. The humanitarian situation in the world and in the region was also discussed.

The head of the Belarusian delegation delivered a statement at the general debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly outlining the approaches of the Republic of Belarus to topical issues of the world order and to the role that the UN should play in current processes.
