13 May 2022

On May 13, 2022 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, took part in the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Dushanbe.

The Foreign Ministers of the CIS member states exchanged views on urgent issues on the international agenda and interaction within the framework of the Commonwealth. The Ministers discussed the current situation in the CIS region and paid special attention to counteracting modern challenges and threats to international security.

The participants discussed the implementation of the Action Plan to intensify the partnership between the Foreign Ministries of the CIS states, implementation of the Plan of multilevel inter-ministerial consultations within the CIS, as well as cooperation between the countries in the spheres of scientific research, youth cooperation and tourism.

V.Makei in his statement touched upon the most urgent topic on the international agenda, namely the situation in Ukraine. Foreign Minister stressed that Belarus advocates the quickest possible settlement of the conflict by diplomatic means based on a balance of interests and the construction of a balanced and sustainable mechanism of European security.

The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry highlighted that attempts to limit the involvement of Belarus and Russia in international affairs will not help to resolve the situation in Ukraine. It will complicate the peace negotiation process, in the organization of which the Republic of Belarus has played a significant role.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister spoke in favour of strengthening multilateral cooperation between the CIS member-states and closer coordination of actions in the external area.

Following the meeting, a number of documents were signed aiming at deepening cooperation between CIS countries in foreign policy and humanitarian spheres.

The parties also expressed intention to continue implementing the Action Plan to intensify the partnership between the Foreign Ministries of the CIS states in order to deepen the cooperation within the Commonwealth and strengthen its international authority.

Next session of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers will take place on  October 13, 2022 in Nur-Sultan.
