The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus summons the Chargé d'Affaires of Poland over the decision of the Polish authorities to temporarily close the border
09 September 2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of the Republic of Poland, Krzysztof Ożanna, to whom a verbal protest was lodged over the decision of the Polish side to suspend movement across the state border for the duration of the Zapad 2025 military exercises.
The illegal measures taken by one country in fact affect the entire border of the European Union with Belarus, creating significant difficulties for the normal functioning of international movement of people and goods. Poland's actions are damaging to many countries in both the East and the West. This is a clear abuse of its geographical position, "privatising" the borders of the EU and the EAEU, the West and the East.
This step seems unfounded, especially taking into account the complete openness and transparency of the Belarusian exercises to the international community. The temporary suspension of border crossing seems to be more about hiding Poland's own actions than about the presence of any threat from Belarus.
Such measures are a continuation of the policy of undermining relations with neighbouring countries and contribute to further escalation of tensions in the region, creating risks for stability and predictability in international relations.
This stance was also communicated to the Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union in the Republic of Belarus, Steen Noerlov. The European diplomat assured that Poland's actions would be assessed in terms of the proportionality of the measures taken and the actual degree of threat.
