Foreign Minister V.Makei addresses the General Debate of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly

On September 27, 2021 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, made a statement at the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

For the first time since 2019, the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly is being held with the possibility of personal presence of the heads of state, government and foreign ministries of member states.

V.Makei presented Belarus’ stance on the most important issues on the international agenda, drew attention to the landmark initiatives of our country in the UN, pointed out the problems that require urgent decisive action by the world community to preserve peace and security.

It was mentioned that among the most serious challenges that threaten the sovereignty and independence of member states are the practice of imposing artificial patterns of social and economic development on independent countries, the barbaric sanctions policy against unwanted governments, economic terrorism and the return of the world to elements of bloc confrontation.

The Belarusian Foreign Minister recalled the long-overdue need to build a global dialogue on security, which would contribute to the formation of a new, effectively functioning, truly fair world order. The activity on mobilizing multilateral efforts in the field of combating human trafficking was mentioned among the initiatives of our country in the UN aimed at maintaining global and regional stability. The Minister drew attention to the fact that Belarus will table this year at the UN General Assembly and its Third Committee the traditional resolution “Improving the coordination of efforts against trafficking in persons”.

The statement emphasized the importance of the idea promoted by Belarus in the UN to actively employ the potential of regional integration and "integration of integrations" to achieve the goals of sustainable development and maintenance of international peace and security.

V.Makei rejected the false and groundless accusations of the Presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia against Belarus in connection with the escalation of the migration crisis at the borders of these countries. He stressed that it is precisely as a result of the inhuman policy of the collective West that the problem of refugees is reaching an unprecedentedly alarming level today. Instead of analyzing and trying to understand the underlying causes of the risks that have arisen, neighboring countries deliberately present Belarus as a source of tension in the region by using the humanitarian agenda and manipulating people’s lives to whip up anti-Belarusian rhetoric. The Minister drew attention to the complete refusal of the neighboring countries from dialogue with Belarus on this issue despite the repeated proposals of Minsk to hold consultations between relevant agencies.

In his speech, V.Makei noted that Belarus adheres to the policy of good neighborhood and is always committed to mutually beneficial cooperation with all UN member states without exception.

The Foreign Minister pointed out the inadmissibility of using the UN to exert political pressure on sovereign states and interfere in their internal affairs.
