Permanent Representative of Belarus Y.Ambrazevich elected as a Chairperson of the UN Economic Commission for Europe

On 9 – 10 April 2019, the 68th session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) took place in Geneva.

During the session, the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office in Geneva, Yury Ambrazevich, was unanimously elected as a Chairperson on UNECE. Belarus will be heading the Executive Committee and the UNECE Bureau for the period from 2019 to 2021. Switzerland and Romania were elected as Vice-Chairs.

It is for the first time Belarus was elected to the highest position of the main executive body of an international economic organization of the UN system. The decision taken testifies to the recognition of the significant contribution of our country to strengthening UNECE capacity which serves as a comprehensive and effective platform for the economic and social development of the member states of the Commission.

For reference: UNECE is one of the five regional economic commissions of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations with its headquarter in Geneva. The structure includes 56 states, in particular the countries of Europe, Central Asia, the USA, Canada and Israel. The key task of the UNECE is to promote economic cooperation in Europe, to strengthen economic integration and trade and economic ties within the region. The UNECE Session is the governing body of the Commission and is held every second year. During the intersessional period the Executive Committee of the UNECE provides overall guidance to the Commission.
