Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus S.Aleinik visits Algeria

On April 15, 2024 as part of the programme of work in Algeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, met with the President of the National People's Assembly of Algeria, Brahim Boughali.

The sides discussed the entire agenda of bilateral relations, as well as the international situation. The interlocutor stressed that "there can be no diplomacy and politics without sustainable trade and economic cooperation". In this context, priority attention was given to promising cooperation projects, first of all, in the agro-industrial, food, machine-building and communal spheres. Food security was also touched upon. The sides discussed areas of cooperation in science and technology, education and tourism.

Within the framework of the international agenda, we have noted the proximity of positions on most topical issues, including the same views on the need for a fairer world order, the inadmissibility of illegal pressure and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states and the need to respect the diversity of their development paths.

Special attention was paid to the development of parliamentary diplomacy. The Minister informed the Algerian side about the results of the parliamentary elections in Belarus. The parties confirmed their interest in developing interparliamentary cooperation, including the establishment of friendship groups and mutual exchanges of visits.

Priority areas of industrial cooperation were discussed by Sergei Aleinik with the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production of Algeria, Ali Aoun.

The parties singled out a number of specific projects for the assembly of Belarusian machinery, which will be substantially elaborated by the parties concerned in the coming months. The parties agreed in principle on the need to consistently expand the presence of Belarusian industrial enterprises in Algeria. At the same time, the Belarusian side was invited to use this platform to enter the African free trade zone market with its product range.

The Algerian side stressed the high quality of a number of Belarusian pharmaceuticals and expressed interest in cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. The two countries agreed to establish direct interaction between the interested parties and to set up working groups in a number of specific areas, which will provide relevant developments in the coming months.

Minister Ali Aoun accepted the invitation and confirmed his intention to pay a visit to Belarus in the near future to meet with his Belarusian counterpart, familiarise himself with the industrial potential of our country and continue negotiations.

On April 15, 2024 Sergei Aleinik also held negotiations with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, Youcef Cherfa, who was appointed co-chairman of the Belarusian-Algerian Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

The main topics of the talks were bilateral projects in the agricultural sector and agricultural engineering, as well as practical aspects of the work of the Joint Commission, including the dates of its meeting scheduled for the coming months. In this context, following the invitation of the Belarusian side, Y.Cherfa confirmed his intention to visit Minsk in the near future and continue substantive talks.

As a result of the meeting, the issue of certification of Belarusian dairy products for supplies to the Algerian market was resolved. The relevant certificates were signed by the Algerian side and handed over to the Belarusian delegation following the negotiations. The Algerian Ministry of Agriculture also handed over its project to certify Belarusian meat products for the Algerian market.
