27 September 2022

On September 26, 2022 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, met with the President of the UN General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi.

The head of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus expressed support for the priorities of the chairmanship of the current session of the UN General Assembly. Readiness was emphasized to provide the necessary assistance to the Chairman in the development and improvement of the UN system. The situation in Ukraine and the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict were discussed. The parties also touched upon the subject of sanctions in the context of global food security.

The President of the UN General Assembly expressed gratitude for the active role of Belarus in the UN and hope for further cooperation on the main issues of the international agenda, including climate change, the pandemic, and water issues.

V.Makei, during his participation in a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, emphasized the unprecedented level of tension and mistrust, which entails an increase in the risks of military confrontation, which makes nuclear weapons and the threat of their use almost so as real as it was 70 years ago.

The head of the Belarusian delegation called for intensifying the dialogue between countries possessing nuclear weapons in order to make the process of nuclear disarmament multilateral and irreversible, noting also that nuclear-weapon-free zones are an integral part of the global non-proliferation regime.

The Minister recalled that in the mid-90s of the last century, Belarus proposed the idea of creating such a zone in Central and Eastern Europe, stating that achieving the ultimate goal of ridding the world of nuclear weapons is impossible without restoring trust and returning to an equal and mutually respectful dialogue involving including both nuclear and non-nuclear countries.

During the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Iran Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the parties stressed the positive dynamics in the development of bilateral relations, including taking into account the agreements reached following the recent meeting of the Presidents of Belarus and Iran in Samarkand.

V.Makei thanked the Iranian side for its support in the process of formalizing Belarus' full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The interlocutors reaffirmed mutual interest in building up trade and economic cooperation in the face of sanctions pressure and continuing mutual support in international organizations.
The ministers also discussed the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts at various levels.
