On November 7, 2018 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Andrei Dapkiunas, took part in the Belarusian-Chinese business forum in Shanghai, organized as a part of the First China International Import Exhibition.

His statement was dedicated to the dynamics of bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Belarus and China in the context of the need to correct the existing trade imbalance.

A.Dapkiunas noted that despite the steady growth in the volume of bilateral trade, the share of Belarusian exports in it remains less than the supply of Chinese goods to Belarus. The Deputy Minister identified the correction of this imbalance as one of the most important issue in the context of developing and improving the quality of the Belarusian-Chinese cooperation and identified new growth factors that can help solve this problem.

The Belarusian diplomat drew the attention of the forum participants to the active work of Belarusian agricultural producers in increasing supplies of high-quality Belarusian food to China, which have increased 5 times since the beginning of 2018. A.Dapkiunas noted a balanced structure of bilateral trade in services (trade in services makes up 1/5 of the total trade turnover between the two countries), as well as a great potential for cooperation in the field of education and tourism.

The Deputy Minister noted that Belarus has special hopes on the growth of exports to China through the active development of direct links between the regions of Belarus and China. A.Dapkiunas called the transition from credit cooperation in the implementation of projects involving tied crediting to investment cooperation through the growth of the inflow of direct investment from China into the economy of Belarus as an important factor in correcting the imbalance in bilateral trade. During the visit to the research center of the Huawei corporation in the free economic zone of Shanghai, A.Dapkiunas met with the president of Huawei Technologies for global government relations, Victor Zhang.

During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed prospects for the development of cooperation between Belarus and Huawei Corporation, which is one of the world's largest producers of information and communication products. The Deputy Minister noted exceptional opportunities for high-tech business in Belarus, including in terms of using the possibilities of mobile communication of a new generation in urban economy, medicine, education and the implementation of advanced solutions within the concept of “smart home — smart city — smart society”. A.Dapkiunas urged the leadership of the “Huawei” corporation to supplement research works and the sale of finished products in Belarus by using the unique advantages of Belarus and the Chinese-Belarusian industrial park “Great Stone” to organize the production activities of the “Huawei” corporation in Belarus.
