Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei participates in the UN General Assembly session

On September 19, 2016 during the visit to New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, participated in the High Level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on refugees and migrants.

In his statement, the Head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry noted that today the majority of refugees in the world are a direct or indirect result of the protracted armed conflicts, direct intervention in internal affairs of sovereign states and violation of fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.

V.Makei emphasized that some countries that actively promote the principle of “shared responsibility” should, first of all, lay responsibility with those who are behind the fuelling of conflicts on the territory of sovereign states that force people to flee their homes en masse.

Head of the Belarusian Foreign Service stressed that in order to improve and strengthen migration management mechanisms better coordination of actions of all stakeholders is required. An important role in this process Belarus attributes to global partnerships that unite states, civil society, international organizations, private sector, partnerships built on mutual trust, mutual support and understanding.

During the visit, V.Makei held bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, Turkey, Republic of Korea and Mozambique, and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State.

The planned visit of the Prime Minister of Belarus to Maputo was the key point of discussion between V.Makei and the Head of the Mozambique Foreign Service, Oldemiro Marques Balói. The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus underlined that the visit should be action-oriented and aimed at giving the impetus to Belarusian-Mozambiquean interaction.

At the meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, V.Makei reiterated the strong support by Belarus of the Turkish authorities and people in context of the attempted coup in the country in July, and commended the efforts on improvement of cooperation between Russia and Turkey. M.Çavuşoğlu congratulated Belarus on successful election to the national Parliament. 

At the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Yun Byung-se, the parties discussed issues of the bilateral cooperation, some aspects of development of international situation, as well as situation on the Korean Peninsula. The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Korea expressed readiness to revitalise bilateral relations with Belarus and re-energise interaction in the framework of the international organisations.

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Republic of Ecuador, Guillaume Long, V.Makei discussed the ways of addressing the decrease in bilateral trade and economic interaction. G.Long briefed the Belarusian counterpart on the development of the situation in the country and region and emphasized the importance of Belarus for Ecuador as a reliable trade and economic partner. The Ministers agreed on importance of arranging high-level contacts as means of giving a new momentum to the Belarusian-Ecuadorian relations.

In the course of the meeting with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, Victoria Nuland, the sides noted the need to preserve positive dynamics in the Belarusian-American relations. Special attention was paid to the discussion of measures critically important for full normalisation of interaction between Belarus and the United States. The sides also exchanged opinions on the situation in the Eastern European region.
