Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN A.Dapkiunas participates in the appointment ceremony of the Goodwill Ambassador

On September 16, 2016 at the UN headquarters, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations, Andrew Dapkiunas, participated in the appointment ceremony of Nadia Murad as the first UN Office on Drugs and Crime Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking,



Background Information:  A young Yazidi woman Nadia Murad was enslaved by the Islamic State. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as a survivor of trafficking in persons at hands of ISIL. She was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2016.

The event was held on the occasion of the International Day of Peace. The ceremony was attended by the President of the UN General Assembly, Peter Tomson, and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In his speech on behalf of the Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking, A.Dapkiunas welcomed the appointment of Nadia Murad as the UNODC Goodwill Ambassador and underlined the unique nature of her honourable mandate.

The head of the Belarusian mission noted the importance of uniting in the fight against human trafficking the efforts of all interested partners and reconfirmed the readiness of the Group of Friends to work together to strengthen the coordination of efforts of the UN Member States, international organizations and civil society.
