30 July 2020

On July 30, 2020 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Andrei Dapkiunas, took part in a special event dedicated to the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, which is celebrated annually in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution, adopted on the proposal of Belarus in 2013.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Ministry of the Interior, the United Nations, the International Organization for Migration, the United States and Norway as major donor countries, as well as the OSCE, the EU and other national and international partners involved in combating trafficking, use this memorable day to draw attention to the problem of human trafficking.

A.Dapkiunas noted in his speech that the announcement of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, which raises awareness of this crime in the world and calls for priority to be given to the proper protection of victims of human trafficking was preceded by practical steps of Belarus.

At the UN Summit in 2005, the President of Belarus addressed the international community with an initiative to form a global partnership to combat human trafficking, uniting the efforts of all partners.

In development of this initiative, Belarus has prepared a resolution "Improving the coordination of efforts to combat trafficking in human beings", which is adopted by consensus by the UN General Assembly in co-sponsorship of about 100 states. The United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking, which is exactly 10 years old today, was unanimously adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2010.

The global plan allowed to form The Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons, which includes more than 20 international organizations, and to unite states from all regions of the world into a the Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking.

A significant achievement is the creation of the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. Belarus has repeatedly sent voluntary contributions to the Fund.
The Belarusian diplomat called on all partners to continue close cooperation, without which it is impossible to eradicate slavery in our world, a phenomenon that is a shame to humanity.

The First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Gennady Kazakevich, the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna, Kazana-Wisniowiecki, the Representative of the International Organization for Migration in Belarus, Mahym Orazmuhammedova, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires in Belarus, Jeffrey Giauque, the Head of the Political, Economic and Mass Media Division of the EU Delegation to Belarus, Evelina Shultz, and the Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society, Olga Mychko, also addressed the audience of the event and in the Internet.
