Coordination Group Belarus – EU met in Brussels

On April 6-7, 2016 Brussels hosted the first meeting of the Belarus-EU Coordination Group, a new format of a structural and comprehensive dialogue between Belarus and the European Union.

Belarus at the meeting of the Coordination Group was represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alena Kupchyna. The EU delegation was led by the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Helga Schmid.

In the course of the meeting, the parties discussed the issues related to the state and prospects for development of Belarus-EU relations, Belarus participation in the Eastern Partnership initiative and the intensification of dialogues in the economic, financial and environmental sectors. The parties also considered the ways to launch new bilateral dialogues on trade, energy, customs, innovations and standardization issues, as well as to boost cooperation in modernization, technical assistance and human rights.

The Head of the Belarusian delegation also held a number of working meetings with representatives of the European organizations, namely with the Head of the Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for the European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Michael Karnitschnig, and the Managing Director for European External Action Service, Thomas Mayr-Harting.
