Geneva hosts solemn event dedicated to the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day

On April 26, 2017 for the first time the international community celebrates the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day. The decision was adopted upon the initiative of Belarus by the UN General Assembly in December 2016.
On this day, the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the United Nations Office in Geneva together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus held a special commemorative event dedicated to the 31st Anniversary of the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The photo-exhibition “Belarus. 30 years after Chernobyl” was presented to the employees of international organizations based in Geneva, representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as humanitarian non-governmental organizations from Switzerland, France and Italy.
The solemn opening ceremony of the photo exhibition was attended by the Permanent Representative of Belarus in Geneva, Yuri Ambrazevich, the Assistant Director-General of WHO, Oleg Chestnov, Heads of the Permanent Representatives of Ukraine and Russia, as well as the Director of the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus, Oleg Ryzhkov.
Y.Ambrazevich urged to take into account the experience of the Chernobyl tragedy to prevent similar catastrophes in the future and ensure an adequate level of readiness for man-made emergencies. The Belarusian diplomat stressed that Belarus is convinced that the Chernobyl agenda should remain the focus of attention of the international community for the foreseeable future.
During the discussion, the participants of the event unanimously stressed the importance of further coordinated international cooperation in the field of eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in order to assist the governments of the most affected countries in ensuring the sustainable development of the affected areas.
