Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN A.Dapkiunas participates in the session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board

On September 6-9, 2016 the delegation of the Republic of Belarus headed by Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrei Dapkiunas, takes part in the second session of the Joint Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Fund for Population and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNDP/ UNFPA/ UNOPS).

The Belarusian delegation raised a number of questions on the activities and cooperation with UNDP and UNFPA during the session, including, issues of ensuring the balance of interests between donor and recipient countries.

In his statements, A.Dapkiunas stressed that in order to be effective UNFPA and UNDP should respect the specific needs and political, economic and cultural environment of recipient countries. For example, in the context of family planning, it is strategies aimed to increase birth rate that are vital in countries with a negative population growth. Thereupon, the delegation of Belarus suggested UNFPA, as a key UN agency in the sphere of population development, to provide to relevant Member States assistance in elaboration and implementation of such strategies.

The delegations also discussed preparation for a new quadrennial comprehensive policy review of the UN system operational activities that would be a basis for new Strategic plans of UNDP and UNFPA. During this discussion, delegation of Belarus expressed its confidence that UNDP would make a significant contribution to that process taking into account the Programme’s rich experience to promote development.
