On May 5, 2017 the UN Headquarters in New York hosted a solemn commemorative ceremony to mark the 72nd Anniversary of the end of World War II. The event was organized upon the initiative of the Permanent Missions of Belarus and Russia to the United Nations with support of the Permanent Missions of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The symbolism of the ceremony lies in it being held near the Tree of Peace and Unity that was planted at the initiative of Belarus two years ago in commemoration of the 70th   Anniversary of the End of World War II. Nowadays this tree is the only tree planted on the premises of the UN Headquarters on behalf of all UN Member States.

The Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan, Aksoltan Atayeva, as the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps of the United Nations and the Acting President of the UN General Assembly, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers of the ceremony. United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, also welcomed the participants of the ceremony.

During the commemorative ceremony, a memorial photo exhibition “Monuments: Keeping the Memory of the Long-gone War Alive – Symbols of Heroism, Symbols of Tragedy, Symbols of Hope” was inaugurated. It was prepared by the nine countries-organizers under the coordination of Belarus.
