Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus on Nuclear Test Conducted by Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, on February 12, 2013

12-02-2013

The Republic of Belarus strongly condemns the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the third one already, in defiance of a number of UN Security Council Resolutions, including most recent Resolution 2087 (2013). This action seriously threatens regional peace and security in North-Eastern Asia and outside the region.

Belarus believes that Democratic People’s Republic of Korea should act in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the relevant UN Security Council decisions and also join the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

Belarus was among the first to voluntarily abandon the right to possess nuclear weapons, demonstrating that it is possible to preserve peace and stability without reliance on this type of weapons of mass destruction. Belarus is willing to further facilitate the strengthening of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and nuclear disarmament.
