On the negotiations on Belarus’ accession to the WTO

On July 26-27, 2017 the meeting of the WTO General Council took place in Geneva. The Belarusian delegation headed by the Director of the Department for Foreign Economic Activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Roman Sobolev participated in the meeting as an Observer. The delegation also included the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN Office in Geneva.

On the margins of the event the Belarusian delegation met with the Officer-in-Charge of the WTO Accessions Division Maika Oshikawa and the Chairman of the Working Party on Belarus’ accession to the WTO, the Permanent Representative of Turkey in Geneva Kemal Madenoglu. The WTO representatives welcomed the fact that in July 2017 Belarus disseminated a package of documents among the WTO members, including the Draft Working Party Report. This will make it possible to hold the 9th official meeting of the working party on Belarus' accession to the WTO in the autumn 2017.

The bilateral consultations were held with a number of WTO Members in order to move forward the multilateral and bilateral negotiations. The delegation discussed with the representatives of the Government of Argentina and the WTO Secretariat the organizational issues related to the participation in the 11th session of the WTO Ministerial Conference (Buenos Aires, December 10-13, 2017).
