Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei pays an official visit to Georgia

On December 20, 2016 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, paid an offiaicl visit to Georgia. In the course of the visit, V.Makei held meetings with the President of Georgia,  Giorgi Margvelashvili, the Chairman of Parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mikheil Janelidze, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II.

At the meeting with the President of Georgia, G.Margvelashvili, the sides stressed that Belarus and Georgia always had friendly and open relatios.  The parties noted that the intensification of contacts at the highest and high levels in 2015 contributed to the promotion of the bilateral cooperation. The sides also discussed the facilitation of the official visit of the President of Georgia to Belarus in 2017.



The President of Georgia highly estimated the achievements of Belarus in the field of agriculture, expressed interest in studying the experience of the Belarusian agricultural sector. In accordance with the agreements reached during the meeting of the Intergovernmental Belarusian-Georgian Commission on economic cooperation, the parties proposed to speed up the implementation of a joint project on the production in Georgia of low-power tractors, provide assistance in training of farmers on the basis of the Belarusian Universities. The President of Georgia was informed about the cooperation with other countries on the construction of agricultural towns.

The sides agreed to continue the constructive dialogue and mutual support within the EU “Eastern Partnership” initiative.

At the meeting with the leadership of the legislative branch, Irakli Kobakhidze, V.Makei congratulated him on his election as the President of Parliament and noted the high level of organization of the parliamentary election campaign in October 2016. Due to the fact that parliamentary elections were recently held in Belarus and Georgia, the parties noted the reasonability of the formation of the groups of friendship in the Parliaments in the near future that will increase the efficiency of inter-parliamentary cooperation at the bilateral level and in different international parliamentary dimensions.

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, M.Dzhanelidze, the sides discussed current issues on the bilateral agenda, regional security, cooperation in international organizations. The parties noted that the opening of the Belarusian Embassy in Georgia will bring bilateral cooperation to a new level.

It was noted that the parties are interested in the realization of projects on the development of energy and logistics corridors, including the participation in the Silk Road Economic Belt.

The sides positively evaluated an agreement to facilitate in 2017  visit to Georgia of the management of the Hi-Tech Park of the Republic of Belarus to organize the exchange of IT-experts.

The parties also discussed the possibility of holding in 2017 of the Days of Belarusian Culture in Georgia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus met with the Head of the Georgian Autocephalous Church — Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia, Ilia II.V. Makei noted that contacts and relations between the Belarusian Exarchate and the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church are constantly strengthening and contribute to further spiritual rapprochement of the nations of Belarus and Georgia.

The Head of the Georgian Autocephalous Church appreciated the social policy in Belarus, aimed to support people, as well as Minsk peace efforts on the international arena.

On the same day Foreign Ministers of Belarus and Georgia took part in the opening ceremony of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Tbilisi. The event was attended by representatives of the Presidential Administration, Government and Parliament of Georgia, the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the City Hall of Tbilisi, the representatives of the diplomatic corps and business. V.Makei noted that the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus is a new stage in the history of bilateral relations and will contribute to further expansion of relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between Belarus and Georgia.

In accordance with the format of the official visit, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus laid a wreath to the Memorial to the Heroes who lost their lives in the fight for territorial integrity of Georgia.
