On Cooperation Between Belarus and UNESCO

On May 12 Belarus will mark 50th anniversary of membership in the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO).

Within the framework of the festive events the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris will present the photo exhibition of Oleg Lukashevich and Alexander Alekseyev “Belarusian heritage – dialogue of cultures”. The national legal information center will be presented as well.

The exhibition of publications on the UNESCO projects in Belarus in the center of UNESCO information and documentation of the National Library will be dedicated to the jubilee. The Days of Cultural Variety will be held in Minsk. Within the framework of the days, cultural and art workers of the CIS states will hold the congress “New generation in the cultural dialogue on the post-Soviet area”. The national art museum will present a CD dedicated to the exposition of the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow.

Every year the cooperation between Belarus and UNESCO becomes more effective. Belarus has implemented several projects with the technical, financial and expert assistance of this Organization. In particular, they aim to use international experience in education development, to develop effective strategies in the sphere of water resources and biological variety of Polesie, to preserve the cultural and natural heritage, to develop the cultural tourism and to make more available the access to cultural values by transferring them into the digital basis.

Belarus has become a member of the Executive Council – the UNESCO managing body for 2002-2006. Within the framework of this council this republic is a member of the committee on conventions and recommendations and a member of the inter-state council of the program “Information for everybody”. It also takes part in the work of the coordination council of the program “Man and biosphere”.
