On the Participation of the Belarusian Delegation in the Session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

On August 20-21, 2013 Belarusian delegation headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister Mr.Valentin Rybakov took part in the 83rd session of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The Committee examined the combined 17th and 18th periodic reports submitted by the Republic of Belarus in accordance with the provisions of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

In the course of the discussion the members of the Committee highly appreciated the progress achieved by Belarus since its previous report in 2004 in the area of prevention of racial discrimination. It was pointed out that ethnic, racial, religious, national discrimination is non-existent in Belarus.

Also the members of the Committee highly appreciated the interconfessional and interethnic situation in our country. It was observed that heightened attention is devoted to promotion of cultural diversity, development and preservation of cultures of the national communities in Belarus.

Belarus’ historical contribution to the fight against Nazism and the legislative and practical measures undertaken to prevent fomenting of racial, ethnic or religious strife and disparagement of national honour and dignity were also pointed out.

After considering Belarus’ report, the Committee will make the appropriate recommendations on further harmonization of the national legislation.
