On the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and the UN Office in Belarus the panel discussion ‘The National Human Rights Action Plan: Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ took place on 9 December 2016 on the eve of the Human Rights Day.
The National Human Rights Action Plan for 2016-2020, which was adopted in Belarus for the first time ever, has been presented during the event.
The participants were addressed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Alena Kupchyna, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court Mr. Valeriy Kalinkovich, Deputy Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly Ms. Valentina Razhanec, UN Resident Coordinator/ UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Mr. Sanaka Samarasinha, Head of the EU Delegation in Belarus Ms. Andrea Wiktorin, Deputy Regional Director of UNICEF Mr. David Mcloughlin, as well as representatives of civil society, academia and others.
Ms. Alena Kupchyna stressed the historical significance of the adoption of the National Human Rights Action Plan and noted that the latter contains measures that are not exhaustive in daily work of the Belarusian state in the field of human rights.
She also pointed out the importance of cooperation between all partners in the process of implementation of the plan and welcomed the willingness of all interested parties to work constructively to strengthen the protection of human rights in Belarus.
All participants appreciated the fact that the Republic of Belarus became one of the 40 countries in the world that adopted national human rights action plans.
