On November 13, 2017 the UN Headquarters in New York hosted the General Assembly meeting devoted to the revitalisation of its activities.
Background information: special working group on the revitalisation of the General Assembly was established more than 10 years ago. Since the 62th session of the UN General Assembly the group meets annually. At the current session, the working group plans to consider the issue of increasing the role and authority of the General Assembly, its working methods, selection and appointment of the heads of the UN system, the establishment of the appropriate conditions for the work of the Office of the President of the General Assembly and other issues. The Belarusian delegation has been traditionally one of the most active participants in the revitalisation process of the UN General Assembly.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, Irina Velichko, delivered a statement at the first debate during the current session on the issue of revitalisation of work of the UN General Assembly.
In her statement, I.Velichko expressed interest in the implementation of the agreements reached at the initiative of Belarus during the latest session on improvement of the mechanism for interaction of Missions with the UN Secretariat, the publication of the updated version of the UN Journal in all six languages of the Organisation, and proposed to streamline the agenda of the General Assembly by exclusion of items that grow stale.
Member States will begin substantive discussion of the Ad Hoc Group’s work during the current session of the General Assembly in February 2018.
