At the meeting of parliamentarians in St. Petersburg chairman the Council of Republic of the Belarus National Assembly called the year of 2001 an exclusively important landmark for all Eurasian community. Being the chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Eurasian Economic Community he summed up the results of the year at the second sitting of this organization held March 25 in St. Petersburg. Aleksandr Voitovich reminded that last year there was signed a treaty in accordance with which the Customs Committee was transformed into the Eurasian Economic Community. It includes five states - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Belarus. He also stressed that the Inter-Parliamentary Committee and the EEC Inter-Parliamentary Assembly have developed 39 model laws, which are of recommendation nature for the national legislations of the EEC member-states. The majority of the states actively make use of the model laws in their law-making activity, the chairman of the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament noted. Among them are the laws on transport, education and fight against terrorism.
According to Aleksandr Voitovich, the practice of exchanging experience on urgent integration problems of the EEC member-states is very important. In particular, the current sitting considered the experience of the Russia's Federal Assembly. The Belarus National Assembly plans to hold first parliamentary hearings regarding the activity of the EEC IPA in June this year, Aleksandr Voitovich noted.
