27 January 2022

On January 27, 2022 at the initiative of the Belarusian side, a traditional memorial ceremony dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was held at the Yama Memorial Complex in Minsk.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Sergei Aleinik, heads and representatives of diplomatic missions of Israel, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Romania, the Holy See, Slovakia, USA, Turkey, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, the UN Development Program in Belarus, the CIS Executive Committee and a number of public organizations representatives.

In the statement, Sergei Aleinik underlined the inadmissibility of forgetting the lessons of history and called for solidarity actions of the international community against the revival of Nazism and the spread of racial superiority ideologies. The memory of the Holocaust tragedy should serve as a warning to future generations about the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.

The Republic of Belarus, both internally and on the international arena, is making significant efforts to perpetuate the memory of the victims of World War II, the feat of veterans who saved the world from the brown plague, and to prevent the revival and glorification of Nazism. In 2022, Belarus traditionally co-sponsored a United Nations resolution on condemning Holocaust denial.

"Maintaining peace, preserving historical memory and countering its falsification is our common task, our common duty," the Deputy Minister said.

The participants of the ceremony laid flowers at the memorial, honoring the memory of the Minsk Ghetto victims.

On January 25-27, a commemorative line was launched at the National Library building as a symbol of respect and memory for all victims of the Holocaust, and a number of other thematic commemorative events will be held in our country as well.

Background Information: The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established in 2005 by UN General Assembly Resolution No. 60/7, co-sponsored by Belarus among 104 UN member States, and is widely celebrated in the world. The date is timed to the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp "Auschwitz-Birkenau" by the Soviet Red Army troops in 1945 – the largest concentration camp complex in occupied Europe.
