Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus I.Sekreta meets the Deputy Director General of the IAEA

On June 26, 2025 in Vienna the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Igor Sekreta, met  with the Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Karine Herviou.

The interlocutors exchanged views on key areas of cooperation, discussed the international situation, including the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and its impact on the work of the IAEA.

The Deputy Minister expressed deep concern over the ongoing military escalation between Israel and Iran, emphasizing the need for a coordinated international response to prevent the spread of the conflict and possible nuclear risks.

I. Sekreta and K.Herviou discussed efforts to ensure nuclear safety at the national and regional levels, and noted with satisfaction the high level of cooperation achieved in recent years between Belarus and the Agency. The Belarusian diplomat thanked the IAEA for its support in strengthening the nuclear and radiation safety regime, including in the context of the commissioning of the Belarusian NPP.

The Deputy Director General noted the responsible and open approach of Belarus to the active use of the Agency's assessment and advisory missions to resolve issues arising during the construction of the Belarusian NPP.

The interlocutors discussed the prospects for further development of cooperation and expert support from the IAEA, including the preparation of a mission to assess the education and training system in Belarus, scheduled for November 2025, and a mission of the Operational Safety Analysis Team planned for 2026.
