Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus with Regard to the Signing of the Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty

The Republic of Belarus welcomes the signing of the Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty.

Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, related materials and technology is one of the most serious challenges to international security and stability, particularly under the currently growing terrorist threat.

Nuclear-weapon-free zones provide an effective instrument of consolidating the non-proliferation regime at the global and regional levels.

The signing of the Central Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty is an important contribution to ensuring international security and enhancing the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

For its part, Belarus is strongly committed to unswerving and consistent fulfilment of its obligations in the non-proliferation sphere, being an initiator of the proposal to set up a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central and Eastern Europe.
