Meeting of the CIS Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs

On April 5, 2019 Moscow hosted the Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Belarusian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, took part in the Meeting.

The heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the CIS member states discussed current issues on the international and regional agenda, prospects for further cooperation within the Organization. The results of the implementation of the 2018 Plan of Multi-Level Ministerial Consultations within the CIS were summarized, and a similar plan for 2019 was approved.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs adopted the Address on the need to preserve and properly care for the war graves and military monuments of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The draft Statement of the CIS Heads of State in connection with the 80th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Second World War was also reviewed and approved. The draft Statement confirms the commitment of the Commonwealth states to the principles and norms of international law, condemns attempts to justify Nazism and calls for the revival of genuine interaction between countries and peoples on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

During the meeting, the Council approved the draft Agreement on the coordination of interstate relations in the field of fundamental research of the CIS member states, the Agreement on cooperation in museum affairs and the CIS Convention on the transfer of the execution of punishments not related to deprivation of liberty. It was decided to grant the Moscow State University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation named after V.Y. Kikotya status of the core organization of the Commonwealth for the training of personnel in the field of combating crimes committed using information technologies.

For the purposes of strengthening the foreign policy coordination between the Commonwealth states, the heads of delegations discussed the progress in preparing a Program of Action to intensify the partnership between the Foreign Ministries of the CIS member states. The parties agreed to reach the signing of this program during the next meeting of the CIS Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Within the framework of the CIS Meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, held working meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, and Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov.  Some of the most topical issues of bilateral relations were discussed. Following the meeting with R.Meredov, the Program of cooperation between the Foreign Ministries of Belarus and Turkmenistan for 2019-2020 was signed.
