The Participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Mr.Vladimir Makei in the Session of the UN General Assembly (September 29 — October 1, 2014, New York)

On September 30, 2014 Mr.Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, took part in the general debate of the General Assembly during his stay in New York to participate in the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.


Minister exposed major approaches of Belarus to the international cooperation and to United Nations’ role in this process.

Mr.Vladimir Makei noted that this year Belarus would mark the 70th year since Belarus’ liberation from the Nazi invaders. He called to learn the lessons from World War II, which became the tragedy for the whole humanity. Minister suggested seeking ways for mutual understanding at the international level, to reject the policy of imposition of political and economic models of development as well as of extraneous cultural preferences.

Mr.Vladimir Makei emphasized the need for resolution of international issues by creating global partnerships with the participation from Member states, international organizations as well as civil society. It is in this manner that Belarus proposes to resolve such urgent tasks as negative effect of globalization, inequality, poverty, climate change, consumption of energy, food security, water resources etc. It is in the realm of this approach that Belarus advances in UN such issues as combating human trafficking and strengthening of traditional family.

Belarusian Minister expressed hope that on the way to the next UN summit, which will take place in a year’s time, the international community would be able to ensure progress in grappling with urgent tasks of conflict resolution and international sustainable development.

On September 29, 2014 Mr.Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, had several bilateral meetings during his stay in New York to participate in the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.




During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mr.Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu the sides confirmed their readiness to continue political dialog, to implement concrete projects in various fields.




The course of bilateral relations was discussed with the head of the foreign ministry of Nicaragua. In particular the parties took stock of what has been done and what needs to be done with the view to implementing the agreements reached during Minister Makei’s visit to Nicaragua in June 2014.




During the meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria the questions of bilateral relations were discussed as well as cooperation in the international organizations. The parties exchanged views on the situation in Syria and the region, expressed their will to counter the spread of terrorism both in the Middle Еast as well as beyond.


Mr.Vladimir Makei also discussed with deputy foreign ministers of Ecuador, Laos and Kazakhstan the perspectives of relations of Belarus with these countries.

On September 29, 2014 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Mr.Vladimir Makei took part in the high-level event entitled “Child protection: sharing responsibility and strengthening protective environment for children”, which was held, in the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York at the margins of its 69th session.

The event organized by Belarus together with Kazakhstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, the Philippines, Ecuador and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) attracted the attention of numerous Member States and civil society organizations.

In his speech the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus marked that “Development and implementation of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda will be successful if it takes properly into account the interests of the family as a social institution, which plays an important role in the upbringing and protection of children."

Mr.Makei informed the participants about the general approaches and main achievements of Belarus in the field of child education, health, parenting and social support for the families with children.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus underlined that the country's leadership has attached great importance to promotion of the traditional family because of its primary role to protect children and create a favorable environment for their successful development. This directly affects the future of the country.

Mr.Vladimir Makei emphasized the important role and the ability of UNICEF in the protection of children and cooperation with the countries in this area. The Foreign Minister drew attention to the Regional Conference on the Protection of Children, which Belarus in partnership with UNICEF has planned to be held in November 2014 in Minsk.

The representatives of the leadership of the Foreign Ministries of Ecuador, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Justice of the Philippines, UNICEF, as well as the representatives of civil society, thanked Belarus for the side-event on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. They expressed confidence that the results of the discussion would bring a significant contribution to promotion of the family and protection of children and the strengthening of a broad international partnership in this area.
