Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei holds a number of bilateral meetings in China

On April 27, 2016 Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, held a number of bilateral meetings in the course of the working visit to the city of Beijing (China) for participation in the session of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of member-states of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.

Background Information: The Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is an inter-governmental forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia. CICA member-states cooperate in the spheres of high-priority: economy, ecology, humanitarian, military and political collaboration, combatting challenges and threats (terrorism, money laundering, drug smuggling and human trafficking).

The Conference consists of twenty six countries of the Central Asia, South-Eastern Asia, Middle East and North Africa: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Cambodia, China, Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey , Uzbekistan.

Indonesia, Malaysia, the United States, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Japan have an observer status at the Organization.

The Republic of Belarus gained the observer status at the CICA in April 2015.  

V.Makei meets the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Wang Yi, the parties discussed current issues of bilateral relations, including the planning of visits at the highest and high levels, contacts between parliaments of the two countries, holding of the second meeting of the Belarusian-Chinese Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee in 2016, prospects for visa liberalization, as well as for cooperation on the international arena.

Both Ministers noted with satisfaction a high dynamics of the development of bilateral relations between Belarus and China.

The Head of the Foreign Service of Belarus expressed his gratitude to the Chinese counterpart for the invitation to participate in the session of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of member-states of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, in which the Republic of Belarus takes part for the first time as an observer state.

In the course of the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mevlut Cavusoglu, the sides shaped direction for the implementation of the agreements, reached during the visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus to Istanbul in April 2016. The parties discussed issues regarding preparation of the session of the Belarusian-Turkish joint Intergovernmental Economic Commission to be held in May 2016 in Minsk.

Ministers expressed themselves in favour of a closer cooperation of the countries in the frame of international organizations.

Vladimir Makei underlined orientation of the Belarusian side to promote cooperation with Turkey in the spheres of mutual interest.

At the meeting with the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Rashid Alimov, who came into office on January 1, 2016, the sides discussed the issues regarding participation of Belarus as an observer state at the Organization in the SCO events.

The SCO General Secretary informed that for the first time the Minister of Foreign Affairs of an observer-state at the SCO visits the headquarters of the Organization. Rashid Alimov shared information concerning preparation of the meeting of the Council of Heads of the SCO member-states to be held in June 2016 in Tashkent. Belarus is invited to take part in it.

Prospects for implementation of the agreements, reached by the President of the Republic of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, during the meetings with the leadership of Afghanistan in Ufa in July 2015 and in Istanbul in April 2016, Vladimir Makei discussed with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, Hekmat Khalil Karzai.

During the negotiations, the parties adopted decisions regarding contacts in the nearest future aimed at the adoption of joint high-priority actions of the countries that will create a basis for the “road map” of the bilateral cooperation.
