Reference: Central European Initiative (CEI) is a regional association, established in 1989. Currently 18 States are members of the CEI: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Montenegro and Ukraine.

Main goal of the CEI is to promote a flexible and pragmatic European regional cooperation. CEI promotes the interaction between the states in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe in the fields of agriculture, culture, education, energy, environment, human resources, science and technology, tourism, transportation and youth policy.

The activities of the CEI fall into three dimensions: governmental, parliamentary and business.

The Republic of Belarus joined the CEI on a full basis in June 1996. Belarus actively participates in the annual meetings of the heads of governments and foreign ministers of the CEI member states, meetings of the Committee of National Coordinators, the work of the Parliamentary dimension of the CEI.

With the support of the CEI Belarus implemented in 2010 ten international projects, there is a decision on co-financing another eight in 2011.

In 2010 — 2011 CEI together with the EBRD has allocated funding for technical cooperation project of the Vitebsk plant of polymer products, as well as for the “Regional Energy Program for the municipal sector”, that will be implemented in several CEI countries, including Belarus.

Belarus regards cooperation with the CEI as an important one and sees the organization, first of all, as an effective instrument of widening and strengthening of the regional cooperation through implementation of specific joint projects in topical areas (including effective energy, sustainable development, environment, science and technology).
