On September, 24, 2018 during the visit to the UN Headquarters in New York for participation in the events of the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Dapkunas met with the UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo.

Prior to her current appointment in May 2018, Rosemary A. DiCarlo served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Director for Democratic Initiatives for Newly Independent States, Director for the United Nations Affairs at the US National Security Council. She also worked as a Head of the National Committee on Foreign Policy of the United States and as a Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations.

The Deputy Minister briefed the Under-Secretary General on the logic and history of Belarus' efforts to promote the development of an up-to-date mechanism for intergovernmental cooperation in the European-Atlantic region. Andrei Dapkunas highlighted a potential impact of such regional cooperation paradigm on strengthening of peace and security throughout the world.

Belarusian diplomat noted that if a routine public discussion on the existing challenges and conflict situations, even within the United Nations, is not sufficient – then a broader expert-level dialogue with the participation of representatives of leading think tanks and government experts is of particular importance. Belarus is interested in such a dialogue and intends to facilitate and support it by all available means.

The Deputy Minister drew attention of the UN Under-Secretary General to the coherent nature of these efforts of Belarus in relation to the work that the leadership of the UN Secretariat is conducting to strengthen mutual trust and security in the world.

The sides discussed the ways to further promote the discussion of this issue in the nearest future at the level of the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and the UN Secretariat.
