On October 2-6, 2017 Geneva is hosting the 68th session of the Executive Council of the Programme of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The Belarusian delegation composed of the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN at Geneva is taking part in the session.

On October, 4 the Head of the delegation of Belarus and Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations at Geneva, Yury Ambrazevich, delivered a statement in the general debate.

The Permanent Representative has praised the work carried out by the UNHCR that seeks to provide protection to both refugees and stateless persons. He further pointed to the particular relevance of UNHCR’s mandate in the current global context characterized by the increased level of forced displacement. Y.Ambrazevich shared information on Belarus’ approaches towards the idea to elaborate a UN global compact for refugees. He said that the global compact would constitute a tactical response to the challenge posed by the forced displacement.

As far as a strategic response is concerned, what is needed is arriving at more effective conflict- and war-resolution mechanisms, which, in turn, would help address many of today’s transnational challenges. In this regard, the Permanent Representative drew particular attention to the initiative of the President of Belarus to launch a new peace-making process with the view to forging a new strategic vision for a new type of constructive international relations.
