Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei holds bilateral meetings at the UN Headquarters

On September 22, 2016 at the UN Headquarters the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, met with the President of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Peter Tomson.

V.Makei commended the beginning of the work of P.Tomson in his capacity of the President of the United Nations General Assembly and noted his fruitful and long-lasting cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the United Nations.

Foreign Minister expressed full support of the Republic of Belarus to initiatives of the President of the General Assembly, first of all, regarding creation of global mechanisms to facilitate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

President of the General Assembly, in his turn, highly estimated the contribution of the Republic of Belarus to the UN activities, as well as noble principles, which the country consistently promotes in the Organisation.

The sides shared the views regarding the importance of full refreshment of the perception of collective responsibility of the UN member states for the status of business in the organization and agreed on joint work pertaining to the increase of the authority of the General Assembly and revitalization of its’ activity.

V.Makei also invited P.Tomson to visit the Republic of Belarus at his convenience.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus also met with the Minster of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah.

The Head of the Belarusian Foreign Service expressed interest in strengthening relations between Belarus and Oman in the political, trade and economic spheres. In this context, the sides discussed the issues of exchange of visits at the highest and high levels.

V.Makei noted the effectiveness of the visit of the delegation of businessmen from Oman to Belarus and their meeting with the President of Belarus in September 2016.

At the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, the sides noted with satisfaction the positive dynamics of development of the whole complex of the Belarusian-Latvian relations.

V.Makei and E.Rinkevics discussed in detail the possible steps that could contribute to further active development of the dialogue between Belarus and the EU. The parties also discussed the situation in the European Union after the British decision to exit from its membership, the prospects of resolution of the situation in the South-East of Ukraine.
