Participation of the Belarusian delegation in the Executive Board second regular session of UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS

A second regular session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Program / United Nations Population Fund / the UN Office for Project Services (UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS) began its work at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

During the opening of the session, Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Irina Velichko highly appreciated the role of UNDP in assisting countries in implementing international technical assistance projects in the field of development.

Velichko noted the coordinated nature of the work of UNDP and the UN’s country team as a whole in the country and expressed the hope that the reorganization of the UN development system will not result in the malfunction of the work of operational agencies at the country level and to the creation of additional tasks for recipient countries in the field.

The Head of the Belarusian delegation also expressed a number of considerations on the content of the draft UNDP strategic plan for 2018-2021.

As Velichko noted, the work with middle-income countries should also be one of UNDP’s priorities. The head of the Belarusian delegation noted that the development of an integrated strategy for cooperation with them by UNDP jointly with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) will serve the purpose of proper and adequate perception of this category of countries in the UN system for provision of international technical assistance. Velichko indicated readiness of Belarus to join this process.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations highlighted the priority of the SDGs’ for Belarus and proposed the creation of a UN database (UN-machinery) on national mechanisms of member-states responsible for SDGs’ implementation at the national level.

At the end of her speech, the Belarusian diplomat expressed her hope to preserve visible and tangible UNDP’s presence in the country and to continue active interaction in promoting national interests, including within the framework of the SDGs’ implementation.

Backround Information: Belarus and other members of the UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS Executive Board decided at the annual session of the Executive Board to postpone the adoption of the UNDP strategic plan for 2018-2021 from the second regular session to the special session in November this year. The exact date of the special session, which will be one-day, will be determined during the second regular session of the Executive Board.
