National Consultations on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration

On May 16, 2017 Minsk hosted national consultations within the process of Belarus’ preparation for the negotiations on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The consultations are organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs and International Organisation for Migration Office in Belarus.

Background Information: The global compact will be adopted at an international conference on migration to be held at UN Headquarters in autumn 2018.

The global compact will set out a range of principles, commitments and understandings among the UN Member States regarding global governance and enhancement of coordination in the area of international migration.

Belarusian parliamentarians, representatives of the state bodies, governmental organizations, UN agencies and public associations discussed a wide range of issues regarding capacity building and improvement of the national migration policy, interconnection between migration and development, development of the international cooperation to effectively govern migration processes at national, regional and global levels, as well as combatting illegal migration and human trafficking.

Belarus has become one of the first countries in the region to hold the national consultations on this issue. The recommendations of the consultations will form the basis of the national position at the negotiations on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.
