Belarus participates in the conference on Chernobyl at the UN Headquarters

04 May 2015

On May 1, 2015 the 24th International Conference on Health and Environment to mark the 29th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident was held  at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The event was organised by the US non-governmental organisation World Information Transfer Inc and co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Belarus, the Czech Republic and Ukraine to the United Nations.

As one of the keynote speakers at the conference, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Andrei Dapkiunas made a presentation on the international experience of multilateral Chernobyl cooperation. The presentation was previously agreed upon by Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and jointly delivered at the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai in March 2015.

Andrei Dapkiunas stressed that the unique experience of overcoming the consequences of a nuclear accident gained by countries and international organizations should be preserved in the interests of the entire international community. This can be done in the framework of a new strategy on Chernobyl for the period after the 30th anniversary of the accident. Andrei Dapkiunas reminded that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his support for such work in his recent statement on the occasion of the anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy.

Scientific Secretary of the National Commission of Belarus on Radiation Protection Alena Nikalayenka told the participants of the conference about health consequences for Belarusian population in the aftermath of the Chernobyl tragedy.
