Belarus and Japan complete bilateral negotiations on Belarus’ accession to the WTO

On April 27, 2017 the protocol on the completion of bilateral negotiations between the Republic of Belarus and Japan in the framework of Belarus’ accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) was signed in Geneva.

On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Belarus the document was signed by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Yury Ambrazevich, on behalf of the Government of Japan the protocol was signed by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Junichi Ihara.

After the signing ceremony, Y.Ambrazevich positively assessed the intensification of the political and economic dialogue between Belarus and Japan, expressed hope that Belarus’ accession to the WTO will lead to further expansion of trade and investment cooperation between the countries.

The completion of negotiations with Japan is a practical result of steps taken by the Government of the Republic of Belarus to accelerate the process of accession to the WTO. Currently the draft Report of the Working Party is being prepared for consideration at the 9th meeting of the Working Party on Belarus’ accession to the WTO, scheduled for the second half of 2017.

Japan became the twelfth WTO Member, with which Belarus concluded bilateral negotiations on accession to the organization.

In the near future, it is planned to sign bilateral protocols with a number of other interested WTO Member States.
