Belarus – U.S. Human Rights Dialogue

On October 5, 2017 in Washington, D.C. Belarusian delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oleg Kravchenko, met with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the U.S. for European and Eurasian Affairs, Bridget Brink, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State of the U.S. for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Michael Kozak, the Deputy Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, Gretchen Birkle, and other representatives of the U.S. Department of State, U.S. government agencies and NGOs to hold the next round of human rights dialogue.

The parties discussed observance of human rights by the countries, including a number of issues on which disagreements remain between Belarus and the United States. Discussion included human rights situation both in Belarus and in the U.S. The parties exchanged views on human rights cooperation in international organizations, including continued engagement in UN and OSCE on countering human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children.

In the framework of human rights dialogue, the Belarusian delegation took part in a roundtable discussion in the U.S. Helsinki Commission on the American experience of civil society participation in the U.S. Government decision-making process. Representatives of American and Belarusian civil society also participated in the event.

Belarus and the United States intend to continue dialogue on human rights, being one of the important elements of bilateral agenda with the aim to converge positions and ensure further development of Belarus-U.S. engagement in various fields.
