Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Oman

On April 18, 2018 Minsk hosted the fifth round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Oman. 

The Belarusian Side was headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrei Dapkiunas, the Omani delegation was led by acting Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs on diplomatic matters, Mohammed Al-Hassan.

Background Information: The bilateral consultations between Belarus and Oman at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers have been held since 2008. Today they have become the main effective mechanism of the Belarusian-Omani inter-state dialogue.

During the consultations, the sides discussed topical issues on the bilateral agenda, current state and prospects for development of Belarus-Oman political dialogue at high and the highest level, as well as bilateral cooperation in the areas of education, science and culture, prospects for expansion of the legal framework.

Special attention was paid to the development of trade relations, investment cooperation, exchange of visits of business delegations. The sides noted the importance of wider and more aggressive marketing of Belarusian trade, technological and investment opportunities in Oman, and also discussed possible steps in this direction.

The parties agreed to discuss those and other issues in details during the first meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Committee which the sides agreed in principle to set up at the consultations.

The parties also discussed prospects for further mutual liberalization of the visa regime up to complete abolition of visas for holders of ordinary passports. 

Background Information: Today Oman is one of the states whose citizens have the right to a visa-free entry to Belarus for a five-day stay in the country.

In addition, the heads of Belarusian and Omani delegations exchanged views on the current development of the situation in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe as well as discussed the interaction of two nations within the UN.

On the same day the heads of delegations took part in the opening ceremony of the Omani Center for Arabic Language and Culture at the Belarusian State University.
