Belarus initiates recognition in the UN of the International Association of Permanent Representatives

On January 31, 2018 at the UN Headquarters in New York, the draft joint Belarus-Honduras resolution on the recognition in the UN system of the role of the International Association of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations was presented. The resolution is planned for adoption at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

Background Information: International Association of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations was founded in New York in 1988. The objectives of the Association are to serve as a forum between former and current Permanent Representatives to the UN, to liaise between them and t be a focal point for their participation in the activities of various international institutions.

Currently, Association comprises as its’ members more than 200 former and active heads of Missions to the UN.

The initiative was presented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, member of the Association, Andrei Dapkiunas, and the President of the Association, Permanent Representative of Honduras to the UN, Mary Elizabeth Flores Flake. The event was attended by Permanent Representatives to the UN, the UN high-ranking officials.

The aim of the resolution is to institutionalise the Association in the UN and reflect its’ role in establishing connections between Member States by strengthening the atmosphere of trust and openness, thus contributing to the achievement of the purposes of the UN Charter.

Promotion of such non-confrontational and creative initiatives by Belarus supports the positive image of our country as a consistent donor of stability, openness and unity on the international arena.
