Permanent Representative of Belarus A.Kupchyna elected as Chairperson of the regional preparatory meeting

The European regional preparatory meeting for the XIV United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice opened in the Vienna International Center on April 23, 2019. The event is attended by about 50 delegations of the Member States of the UN European Economic Commissions, a number of Observer States, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.

During the opening session, Head of the Belarusian delegation, Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Alena Kupchyna, was elected as Chairperson of the European preparatory meeting. 

The preparatory meeting will cover issues such as strategies for crime prevention towards social and economic development, integrated approaches to challenges facing the criminal justice system, counter-terrorism, current crime trends, in particular new technologies as means for and tools against crime.

For reference. The United Nations Congresses on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice are unique, large-scale, high-level events in this field and are being organized by the UN Secretariat once every five years. The Congresses are of great political importance as they shape international policy in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice and formulate innovative approaches to the significant crime related challenges.

The XIV United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to be held in Kyoto (Japan) on April 20-27, 2020 and will be the first of its kind after the adoption of the sustainable development agenda through 2030. Work of the Congress will focus on the linkages between the rule of law, effective justice and the achievement of development goals.

The work of the Congresses is traditionally preceded by the regional preparatory meetings, whose main objective is to prepare practically-oriented recommendations for consideration in the frameworks of the Congress.
