On October 2, 2017 the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus in the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Yury Ambrazevich, participated in the opening of the Social Forum of the United Nations Human Rights Council as a Co-Chairperson.

Taking into consideration growing challenges and threats for governments and international community in the field of health care (new viruses, mass migration etc.) the Social Forum 2017 focuses on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of the HIV epidemic and other communicable diseases and epidemics.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Executive Director of the UNAIDS, the Director-General of the World Health Organization and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization took the floor during the official opening of the Forum.

In his introductory speech Yury Ambrazevich noted that the topic of the Forum is substantial for many states since it touches the most complex dilemma of identifying the effective ways to reach a balance in addressing a specific individual’s problems and sustainable development of the society as a whole. The Belarusian diplomat underlined in this connection the important role of the Social Forum as a space for open and fruitful dialogue, for understanding of different partners’ positions and for searching for new projects and ideas. He expressed hope that the specific focus of the discussion on the best practices in building social partnerships would make a substantial input into improvement of both the national systems of the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of the HIV epidemic and other communicable diseases and the health care systems directly.

The Permanent Representatives of Belarus and Brazil will conduct the work of the Social Forum that lasts till 4 October 2017 in turns and will present its results at the 37th session of the Human Rights Council in March 2018.
