Q&A of Press Secretary Andrei Savinykh following a press briefing on 8 July 2010

Belta: How does the Belarusian side assess the political outcome of the presidential elections in Poland and consolidation of power in hands of the Civil Platform? Are any new opportunities in co-operation between Belarus and Poland likely to emerge in this respect?

Response: Belarus deeply respects the choice made by the Poles. This is their sacred and sovereign right. Belarus is ready for constructive co-operation with the elected President for the interests of making our fairly neighbourly relationship closer.

With that, we express hope that the election of Bronislaw Komorowski, a well-known and respected politician who attaches great importance to strengthening ties with Poland’s eastern neighbours, will pave the way for a new page in our relationship.

Belarus stands for further enlargement of trade, economic and investment co-operation with Poland, implementation of joint projects in energy, transport, logistics, agriculture and other areas.

We hope to see Poland’s assistance in developing relationship between Belarus and the EU in whole its spectrum, including within the Eastern Partnership.

We believe it is in interest of both nations that the EU visa regime for the Belarusian nationals is relaxed and co-operation between Belarus and the European financial institutions gets larger.

We think that today is a real chance to improve Belarus-Poland relationship. On its part, Belarus will do everything it can to make sure that the improved relationship is a reality.

The Belarusian Radio: How does the Belarusian side assess the decision of the Israeli Government to ease civil cargos delivery to Gaza and to cut limits on the amount of items authorized to come there?

Response: We believe this decision is a right step in the right direction which will help improve the situation on the Palestinian territories.

We think that the steps taken by the Israeli side will have positive implications on the Middle East peace process and will help raise mutual trust and get back to direct negotiations.
