Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Tajikistan were established on September 5, 1996. The Embassy of Tajikistan was opened in Minsk in 1997, the Embassy of Belarus in Dushanbe in 2011.
Belarus and Tajikistan support an active political dialogue and interact constructively at international venues.
On May 14 – 16, 2018 President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko paid an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan. During the visit, the parties confirmed the mutual desire for further constructive development of relations between the two countries, discussed promising spheres of bilateral cooperation, including trade and economy.
On September 27 – 29, 2018 in the framework of the Meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in Dushanbe, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko paid a working visit to the Republic of Tajikistan.
In 2018, Tajikistan was visited by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, the State Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.
In 2017, the volume of trade turnover with Tajikistan amounted to 43.1 million dollars, exports – 39.5 million dollars.
In January – November 2018, the trade turnover between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Tajikistan amounted to 34.8 million dollars, which includes Belarusian exports – 31.4 million dollars.
The main export items to Tajikistan are tractors and tractor units, sugar, carpets and floor coating, chipboards and fibreboards, polyacetals and polyesters, tires, stationery materials.
Cotton fiber, cotton yarn, dried fruits, nuts, textile clothes are mainly imported from Tajikistan into Belarus.
The parties are exploring such promising areas of cooperation as expanding interaction in the food-manufacturing industry and the development of industrial cooperative ties.
The National Exhibition of the Republic of Belarus and the Business Forum of Tajikistan and Belarus with participation of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan business representatives were held in Dushanbe on May 2018.
In September 2018, an additional production line was launched at the Agrotehservice” CJSC – assembly factory of the Belarusian agricultural machinery. Furthermore the assembly of the Belarusian towed machinery has started.
Belarus-Tajikistan humanitarian contacts are actively developing.
Since 2009 the number of Tajik citizens studying in the Republic of Belarus has increased significantly, including within the framework of the established joint faculties.
In 2018 in the Republic of Tajikistan were held the Days of Culture of the Republic of Belarus.
