Foreign Ministry Brand Marks

In 2018, the official heraldic symbols of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (emblem and flag), as well as diplomatic honourable distinctions and insignia were introduced by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No.411.

Foreign Ministry Emblem

The pattern of the Belarusian ornament depicted on the emblem of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs goes back centuries. This emphasize the ancient culture and rich history of Belarusians, our self-awareness and confidence in our historical choices. Red, green and white colors are identical to the colors of the State Flag of the Republic of Belarus. Gray, white and red colors are consonant with the folk culture of Belarusians, as they are the colors of flax, linen, and embroidery of national costumes.

Foreign Ministry Flag

The flag of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a dark blue rectangular cloth with one to two height-to-width aspect ratio. The emblem of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is depicted in the center of the obverse and reverse sides of the cloth.

Diplomatic Insignia

The symbol presents a stylized flower of the Royal Fern, a plant listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus. People believe it to be a prototype of the magic flower “Paparats-kvetka” that is a common image in Belarusian folklore. According to popular belief, the one who finds the magic flower, which blooms only one night a year, is awarded with amazing qualities to understand the thoughts of people, the voices of birds and animals, as well as a possibility to find treasures. When it comes to diplomatic insignia, the Royal Fern represents the key to mutual understanding between people and countries.

A professional holiday, a.k.a. Diplomats Day, has also been established by the Presidential Decree № 411. It is celebrated annually on January 22. This date is associated with the first Foreign Office in the history of modern Belarus statehood, namely with the Commissariat of Foreign Affairs of the SSRB. On January 22, 1919 the first public announcement of the beginning of the Commissariat's activities was placed in the newspaper "Звязда" and its’ location was determined in the city of Minsk.

The establishment of official heraldic symbols of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus along with a professional holiday is a symbolic step towards further strengthening of the Belarusian diplomacy. We believe that it will help to increase the prestige of the diplomatic service, develop and maintain the continuity of generations of Belarusian diplomacy.

By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 412 of October 16, 2018 and in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the establishment of the first diplomatic institution of Belarus, the jubilee medal “100 years of the Belarusian diplomatic service” was established.

Jubilee medal "100 years of the Belarusian diplomatic service "

The plot of the jubilee medal is based on the events from 1917 to 1920, reflecting such an important stage in the history of the Belarusian nation, as the creation of the first modern diplomatic institution known as the People's Commissariat of the BSSR for Foreign Affairs. Cornflower is one of the symbols of Belarus and the Belarusian nation. It reflects the openness and sincerity of Belarusians, our place on planet Earth. The Belarusian ornament is an element of folk costume, which became part of the state symbols of the BSSR, and later on of the Republic of Belarus. Laurel is a symbol of gratitude to the first diplomats of the Belarusian state, a symbol of memory, merits and traditions.
